Civil grand-jury criticism and the district’s disagreement

Historical contract decision; report published June 1, 2026 · 2023-07-20

The June 1, 2026 civil grand-jury report criticizes the July 20, 2023 SDYS contract nonrenewal, attributing it to falsehoods about services for LGBTQ+ students and describing a four-month service interruption. These are civil grand-jury findings, not criminal charges, convictions or an adjudication of individual liability.

Response / later development

In its August 27 response (received September 2), the board majority disputes a single shared motive and the characterization of inadequate support. It acknowledges a short-term absence of dedicated on-site specialists but says counselors, crisis intervention, referrals and other supports remained. It says Wellness Together specialists were on campus at all schools by the response date; that statement is not a newly verified October service inventory.
